We had already been cooking dairy-free when we found out we also needed to go gluten-free because of celiac disease. I was honestly shocked at both the expense of gluten-free products and the inconsistency between brands. Some products tasted great, while others were disappointing or changed recipes completely.
Over time, I have learned that many of our favorite gluten-free foods are best made from scratch. Even so, there are still certain products we continue buying for baking, busy days, traveling, and everyday life. Today, I am sharing some of the gluten and dairy-free products our family reaches for again and again
These are simply products that have worked well for our family over time. Every family’s dietary needs and preferences are different, but these are some of the gluten and dairy free staples we continue coming back to again and again.
For many years, Jovial Pasta was our favorite gluten-free pasta and a product we bought again and again. Recently, though, we started trying Tinkyada Pasta and have really been enjoying it. We love the texture, how well it holds up in recipes, and that it reheats well for leftovers too.
Jovial is still a pasta we keep in our pantry and continue to enjoy, but lately Tinkyada has become the one we reach for most often.
Another product we continue to buy is Bake Believe no-sugar-added chocolate chips. We usually buy them from Sam’s Club, though we have also found them at Walmart and Amazon. We use them often in baking, trail mixes, or even just a small handful for a quick snack.
We also regularly use dairy-free butter alternatives in our kitchen. Miyoko’s Organic Vegan Butter is probably our favorite for flavor and baking, especially in cookies, where we think it gives the best texture and taste. It is definitely more expensive, though, so we do not always buy it.
Country Crock Plant Butter has also worked well for us in many recipes and is usually a more budget-friendly option for everyday baking and cooking.
Because we also deal with corn intolerances in our family, we cannot usually use traditional vanilla extract, so vanilla bean powder has become an important staple in our kitchen. This is the one we continue coming back to because it has a great flavor and works well in so many recipes.
We use it regularly in baking, homemade syrups, and other desserts. We have also found that it substitutes well for vanilla extract at about half the amount called for in a recipe.
Gluten-free oats can sometimes be surprisingly difficult to keep stocked. Recently, I ordered a 50-pound bag of gluten-free oats from Azure Standard, and it has worked out wonderfully for our family. We use oats often in both our baking and breakfasts, so buying in bulk has been very helpful for us.
Before this, I usually ordered gluten-free oats from Amazon, though many brands were often unavailable. Bob’s Red Mill has been one of the gluten-free oat brands we have consistently enjoyed.
Because we do so much gluten-free baking from scratch, Bob’s Red Mill Gluten Free Active Dry Yeast has become another staple we continue buying. We use it often for homemade breads, pizza dough, and other baked recipes.
Finding gluten-free baking ingredients that work consistently can sometimes take trial and error, but this is one product we have continued to keep stocked in our pantry.
Simple Mills Soft Baked Almond Flour Bars in the Dark Chocolate Almond flavor are another favorite in our house. These are one of the snacks we especially like to keep on hand for traveling or busy activity days.
It can be difficult to find gluten and dairy-free convenience foods that are easy to grab while still tasting good, but these have worked well for our family.
Quinn Filled Pretzels have also become one of our favorite travel snack options. The Pizza flavor is everyone’s favorite in our family, though we also enjoy the Cheddar variety.
They also make peanut butter and almond butter-filled options, but those tend to be the last choice for our kids. These are one of the snacks we usually grab when we can find them in stock because they disappear quickly in our house.
One pantry staple we continue buying is rice from the Royal Rice Company. We especially love both the white and brown basmati rice varieties. Besides using them in everyday meals, I grind both of these to make homemade rice flours for our gluten-free all-purpose flour blend.
We also often cook the rice mixed with quinoa for many of our meals. It has become one of those versatile staples we always like to keep stocked in our pantry.
We prefer to use avocado oil in much of our cooking and baking. While we do use other oils occasionally, this is the one we reach for most often. We use it in muffins, pancakes, waffles, cakes, and many other recipes where butter would normally be melted.
We do not typically use it in cookies, but for most other baking, it has worked very well for our family.
For a long time, I usually bought avocado oil either from our local grocery store or Amazon, depending on the best price. Surprisingly, though, we recently discovered that Menards carries huge bottles for a much better price, and that has become one of our favorite places to buy it now.
Finding gluten and dairy-free products that work well for an entire family can sometimes take a lot of trial and error. While many of our favorite meals are still made from scratch, these are some of the products that have become dependable staples in our kitchen over the years.
Whether we are baking bread, packing snacks for travel, preparing quick meals on busy days, or stocking our pantry, these are some of the gluten and dairy-free products we continue reaching for again and again.
