The Picture I Could Not Forget

There is a picture in my mind that I have never forgotten.

I was a young child, sitting in church while my father preached. I do not remember every word he said that day, but I remember exactly what I saw in my mind.

He was preaching about the cross.

As I listened, I could picture Jesus hanging on the cross. I could picture the pain. I could picture Him suffering. And somehow, even as a young child, I understood something that changed my life forever — He was doing it for me.

Jesus knew every sin that I had committed and that I would ever commit.

He knew every wrong choice, every selfish thought, every failure that I would have. And yet He still chose the cross.

I remember thinking about the pain He endured for me. The nails. The suffering. The rejection. And even more than the physical pain, I remember thinking about the moment when Jesus cried out:

“My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?”
— Matthew 27:46

The thought that the Father turned away as Jesus carried my sin overwhelmed me.

I could not get that picture out of my mind.

That day, sitting in church, I realized something with certainty: I could never get to heaven on my own. No amount of goodness, effort, or works could save me. I was a sinner, and I owed a debt for my sin that I could never pay myself.

But Jesus paid that debt for me on the cross.

He took my punishment so that I could have forgiveness and eternal life through Him.

As I grew older, I came to understand even more clearly what the Bible says about salvation.

“As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one:”
— Romans 3:10 (KJV)

“For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;”
— Romans 3:23 (KJV)

“For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”
— Romans 6:23 (KJV)

I understood that my sin separated me from God, but Jesus lovingly offered me a free gift — eternal life through Him.

And how could I receive that gift?

By believing on Him and calling upon His name.

“That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.”
— Romans 10:9-10 (KJV)

“For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
— Romans 10:13 (KJV)

What an amazing promise.

Jesus already paid the price. He already made the way. I did not have to earn salvation or work for it. I simply needed to come to Him in faith, repent, and accept the free gift He was offering.

It is amazing to me that after all these years, that picture is still so clear in my mind.

And even now, as an adult, I still find myself overwhelmed by the same truth:

He knew the cost.
He knew the pain.
He knew my sin.

And He still chose the cross.
