More Than Just a Meal

A lot has changed around our table since our oldest child was born.

I once believed I would raise polite and respectful children who always had perfect manners at dinner. Well, five children later, so much has changed.

Yes, we still believe in teaching manners. I still cringe when there is a burp at the table. However, I have also learned to laugh along with the children when those moments happen. Okay, maybe not every single time — but at least sometimes.

We still remind our children not to talk with their mouths full. But truthfully, I have learned that it is not the most important thing.

If my child is willing to talk, then I want to listen — even if there may be food in their mouth at the same time. I never want to take for granted that my children still want to include Mom and Dad in their lives through each story and retelling of the day.

Hospitality in your home may include:

    • Taking the time to stop and truly listen

    • Laughing along with your children when awkward moments happen

    • Teaching manners without making the table feel tense

    • Reminding our children and spouses that they are loved

    • Making the dinner table a place to share

Our homes do not need to be perfect to be welcoming.  Sometimes hospitality begins with simply making room for the people already sitting around our own table.

Will you show your child hospitality today?
