Easy Homemade Garlic Hummus

One of our favorite quick lunches and snacks around here is homemade hummus. It is naturally gluten-free, dairy-free, and made with simple pantry ingredients that I usually have on hand.

This particular batch was not actually what I intended to make.

I originally planned to make my favorite roasted red pepper hummus. As I started gathering ingredients, I realized I had used up all of my red peppers. Rather than making a trip to the store, I worked with what I already had on hand and ended up making a simple garlic hummus instead.

Honestly, that is one of the reasons I love cooking from scratch. Sometimes the recipe changes based on what is available in the pantry or refrigerator, and that is okay.

While roasted red pepper hummus is still my personal favorite, this simple garlic hummus turned out creamy, flavorful, and perfect for serving with these homemade pita breads.

Garlic Hummus Ingredients

  • 4 cups cooked chickpeas (or about 2 cans, drained)
  • 1/4 cup tahini
  • 1/4 cup lemon juice
  • 2 teaspoons minced garlic
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 to 1/2 cup cold water, as needed
  • Add 2 roasted red peppers, optional

Garlic Hummus Instructions

  1. Add the chickpeas, tahini, lemon juice, garlic, olive oil, and salt to a food processor or blender.
  2. Blend until smooth.
  3. Add cold water a little at a time until the hummus reaches your desired consistency.
  4. Scrape down the sides as needed and continue blending until creamy.
  5. Transfer to a serving bowl or storage container.
  6. Refrigerate until ready to serve.

Notes

I often make this recipe using my home-canned chickpeas, but store-bought canned chickpeas work just as well.

For extra creamy hummus, blend a little longer than you think you need to. The additional blending time helps create a smoother texture.

I also like to sprinkle a little paprika on top before serving for extra color and flavor.

My Favorite Way to Serve This Meal

Lately, one of my favorite lunches has been homemade pita bread, hummus, and plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables.

I often serve or pack:

  • Cucumbers
  • Carrots
  • Celery
  • Sugar snap peas
  • Bell peppers
  • Apples
  • Berries

This simple combination travels well and makes a great option for homeschool days, appointments, outings, road trips, picnics, or afternoons spent at the park.

Having homemade pita bread and hummus ready in the refrigerator makes it easy to put together a quick meal without relying on expensive convenience foods.
